April Grant, Telling the Stories Worth Sharing
There is a lot of good happening in Shawnee.
Businesses are opening their doors every morning. People are serving their neighbors. Organizations are meeting needs. Volunteers are giving their time. Entrepreneurs are taking risks and building something new.
But how often do we actually hear those stories?
At this month's Lokal Lunch, April Grant, co-founder and vice president of The Lokal Link, introduced a new project she's building to help change that.
It's called Shine On Shawnee, a podcast created to showcase the good that's already here.
There's More to the Story of Our Community
It's easy for the difficult things happening in a community to get the most attention.
Problems need to be talked about. Challenges need people willing to address them.
But they aren't the whole story.
There are also people quietly doing really good work every single day, and those stories deserve a place to be told, too.
That's the heart behind Shine On Shawnee.
April wants to sit down with the people who are making a positive impact in our community and give them an opportunity to share what they're doing, why they're doing it, and the stories behind their work.
And we think that's something worth shining a light on.
Why Sharing the Good Matters
When someone tells the story of their business, organization, project, or work in the community, something happens beyond simply giving that person exposure.
Other people discover resources they didn't know existed.
A potential customer finds a local business they can support.
Someone hears about an organization and realizes there's a way they can help.
Two people doing similar work discover one another.
Or someone hears a story that simply reminds them, There are good people doing good things here.
That's valuable.
Because the stories we tell about our community help shape the way we see our community.
